Science Turns Authoritarian [Excerpts] By Kenneth P. Green and Hiwa Alaghebandian
Science is losing its credibility because it has adopted an authoritarian tone, and has let itself be co-opted by politics.
In a Wired article published at the end of May, writer Erin Biba bemoans the fact that “science” is losing its credibility with the public. The plunge in the public’s belief in catastrophic climate change is her primary example. Biba wonders whether the loss of credibility might be due to the malfeasance unearthed by the leak of emails from the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom, but comes to the conclusion that malfeasance isn’t the cause of the public’s disaffection. No, people have turned against science simply because it lacks a good public relations outfit.
While nobody would dispute the value of a good PR department, we doubted that bad or insufficient PR was the primary reason for the public’s declining trust in scientific pronouncements. Our theory is that science is not losing its credibility because people no longer like or believe in the idea of scientific discovery, but because science has taken on an authoritarian tone, and has let itself be co-opted by pressure groups who want the government to force people to change their behavior.

When lefty stalwarts Michael Moore and Keith Olbermann decided to jump to the defense of an accused rapist, relying on such authorities as Bianca Jagger, they were either thinking that whether Julian Assange raped two women was irrelevant, because he was doing more important progressive duty. That was the same justification used to support Roman Polanski for his brutal rape of a 13 year old girl. It's more convenient to claim that the rape thing was a CIA plot, as Bianca Jagger did (while keeping "rape" in quotation marks) and Olbermann retweeted.
Predictably thin-skinned, Olbermann reacted to a feminist Twitter campaign with shrill insults, before eventually huffing and puffing and abandoning Twitter. Michael Moore penned an open letter to the Swedish government accusing it of ignoring rapes in general. It's a cynical pose that lets him play rape victim advocate, while defending a particular rapist. What Moore ignored is that most of those rapes in Sweden come from Muslim immigrants anyway.
Neither Olbermann or Michael Moore could wrap their heads around the idea that the US government likely pressured Sweden to bring Assange in-- and that Assange is still an accused rapist. That both can be true at the same time.

Mayoral challenger James Meeks scrambled Thursday to put out a political fire touched off by his suggestion that only African Americans should be eligible for city contracts set aside for minorities and women.
Meeks made the statement on Wednesday during an interview on WVON-AM (1690). It happened during a discussion of why African-American businesses got a 7 percent sliver of Chicago’s $1 billion spending pie through Aug. 31, down from 8 percent a year ago.
“The word ‘minority’ from our standpoint should mean African American. I don’t think women, Asians and Hispanics should be able to use that title,” he said. “That’s why our numbers cannot improve — because we use women, Asians and Hispanics who are not people of color, who are not people who have been discriminated against.”

NEW YORK, Dec. 8 -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) met here on Wednesday with former U. S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger to further develop bilateral relations.
Wang Jiarui, minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, praised the important contributions Dr. Kissinger made to bilateral relations. Wang stressed China is willing to work with the United States to build a positive, cooperative and comprehensive bilateral relationship in 21st century.
Kissinger, who served as the top U.S. diplomat during the presidencies of Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford in 1970s, said that U.S. and China are experiencing an important stage to further develop bilateral ties. He hoped that both countries will enhance strategic dialogue and cooperate in addressing common challenges.
Wang and Kissinger also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.

To prepare for potential confrontation against armed gunmen, the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department recently purchased about 100 AR-15 assault rifles to be carried by deputies in their patrol cars.
“We are all here on the border, and as we all know the cartels have some of these type of weapons,” Sheriff Omar Lucio said.
“With these rifles, we have at least the same if not better firepower in case of a major event. We also have to point out that these weapons are powerful enough to penetrate some types of body armor. If we ever get into a tough situation with someone from over there, we’ll be able to go ahead and take care of our people. Hopefully, it never happens. but if it does we’ll be ready,” he said.

When Yoram Ettinger read The Jerusalem Post’s story last month quoting demographer Prof. Sergio DellaPergola of the Hebrew University saying that Jews had become a minority between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, he immediately asked to present his counterargument.
Over the past decade, the former diplomat turned amateur demographer has devoted a large part of his time to advocating the thesis that the figures for the number of Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip have been grossly exaggerated.
“The momentum is Jewish,” he explained over a PowerPoint presentation at a café in Tel Aviv on Thursday.
“The gap between Jewish and Arab growth is closing and shifting in the advantage of the Jews. Other demographers’ mistake is in assuming that demographic trends will be more of the same.”
At the heart of Ettinger’s claim is a 1997 tally conducted by the Palestinian Authority that he said made several errors: First, it counted the population of Arab east Jerusalem twice; Second, it included hundreds of thousands of Palestinian students permanently living abroad. Together this inflated the count by 615,000 people, Ettinger said.

20 states ask judge to throw out Obama health law
PENSACOLA, Fla. - Attorneys for 20 states fighting the new federal health care law told a judge Thursday it will expand the government's powers in dangerous and unintended ways.
The states want U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson to issue a summary judgment throwing out the health care law without a full trial. They argue it violates people's rights by forcing them to buy health insurance by 2014 or face penalties.

The good folks at the U.N., the people with their hands on the money spigot and the never-ending demand for more U.S. tax dollars are hard at work in the hours leading up to the Christmas recess. Budget gurus at Turtle Bay could take on Washington money managers any day. Particularly since they are busy spending your hard-earned cash on such events as a New York City bash known as "Durban III" next September. And guess what, this includes inviting Iranian President Ahmadinejad to lecture Americans about ending racism and intolerance.
The U.N. budget process goes like this. First, the U.N. majority dreams up new ways to spend U.S. taxpayer dollars on conferences which are antithetical to American values. Durban III is a perfect example.
The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) invented the idea of celebrating the 10th anniversary of the anti-semitic jamboree held in Durban, South Africa in 2001. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, a native of Durban herself, threw the full weight of her office behind the concept.

Abolghasem Bayyenat, reportedly a trade expert for the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Ministry of Commerce, and admittedly a former political officer in its Foreign Ministry, recently penned an article entitled “Economic Sanctions Against Iran”.1 In it, he claims that sanctions are counter-productive, causing pain only to the Iranian people and causing the regime further to resist efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the problem of nuclear proliferation. In his essay, Bayyenat suggests that Iran has successfully mitigated most of the effects of the sanctions, and that they are only hurting the innocent Iranian population.

FLORENCE, Ariz. -- The sheriffs of Pinal and Cochise counties have requested a meeting with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano after the killing of a Border Patrol agent.
Thursday's request comes days after Napolitano held a conference call with sheriffs and police chiefs from 30 jurisdictions along the Southwest border.
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu and Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever say they weren't invited to participate in Tuesday's conference call. Both say they're surprised by the apparent snub because they've made border security a priority.
Napolitano is in Arizona through Friday to meet with Border Patrol agents in Nogales and Tucson. Her visit comes in the wake of agent Brian A. Terry's death late Tuesday night in a shootout with suspected bandits near the Arizona-Mexico border.

Why are carbon trading issues that have gone awry ignored by the media? Two examples: 1-scam artists from around the world, capitalizing on lax regulations at the Danish emissions trading registry have made off with an estimated $7-billion over the last two years, and 2- the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) announced that it will be ending carbon trading this year. Both of these have been underreported (ignored?) by most media.

UPI (12/17) reports, “Norwegian energy company Statoil announced that it struck oil at a shallow-water basin about 90 miles from the Brazilian coastline. Statoil said it encountered an oil reservoir that was about 230 feet thick in the Espirito Santo Basin off the coast of Brazil. Analysis indicates the prospect contains medium crude oil. "We are very pleased to have struck oil here and the result will have an important bearing on our decision regarding further exploration activity in this area," Tim Dodson, Statoil's vice president of international exploration, said in a statement. The company said it plans to operate three exploration wells in Brazil next year. Statoil formed a consortium during the summer with Chinese conglomerate Sinochem Group to develop Brazil's offshore Peregrino field in order to start production in early 2011. That field is about 50 miles offshore in the oil-rich Campos Basin in 325 feet of water. Statoil estimates the field holds at least 300 million barrels of oil.”

Washington Post (12/17) reports, “The Obama administration issued proposed guidelines Thursday for solar development on public lands in the West, a move that could speed renewable-energy projects that have been mired in environmental controversy. The detailed analysis, known as Draft Solar Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement, identifies 24 "solar energy zones" in six states that Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said would be most suited "for environmentally sound, utility-scale solar energy production. " "We think it provides a common-sense and flexible framework through which to grow our nation's renewable energy economy," Salazar told reporters in a conference call. Under the 10,000-page plan, which is now subject to public comment for 90 days, developers would have a higher level of confidence that they could receive federal permits establishing solar ventures in specific areas in states including Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah. "There'll be quite a bit of incentive for the companies to focus on development" in the zones, said the bureau's director, Bob Abbey, adding that he and his colleagues have tried to identify areas that are less prone to conflicts over environmental concerns, such as harm to endangered species or drains on local water supplies." Aaron Klein, Jerusalem bureau chief for World Net Daily, writes:
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has carried out a massive crackdown on a strongman within his own Fatah party known for close ties to the U.S., particularly to the CIA.
Senior PA officials are quietly telling WND that Abbas’s move marks the most significant internal Palestinian crackdown on one of its own in Palestinian history, far outdoing even late PLO Leader Yasser Arafat, who notoriously turned against those in his own party suspected of consolidating too much power or plotting against him.
The PA officials speaking to WND are not ruling out that the Fatah strongman, Mohammad Dahlan, was in the process of staging a coup against Abbas. He is accused of raising his own militia that answers to him, as well as smuggling millions of dollars in PA funds.
The move could have a significant impact on future U.S. security coordination with the PA, which until now has been in large part run through Dahlan. Also, the move is expected to strengthen Hamas in Gaza, since Dahlan controlled the main Fatah militias in that territory that opposed the Islamist organziation.

'The sea gave her back': Wonder in Israel as ancient Roman statue buried for centuries is uncovered by powerful winter storm By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
A long-lost Roman statue buried for thousands of years has been unearthed by massive winter storms that have lashed the coast of Israel this week.
The mysterious white-marble figure of a woman in toga and 'beautifully detailed' sandals was found in the remains of a cliff that crumbled under the force of 60mph winds and enormous 40ft waves.
The statue, which lacks a head and arms, is about 4ft tall and weighs 440lbs. It was found at the ancient port of Ashkelon, around 20 miles south of Tel Aviv.

Is an Islamic tidal wave coming? "There is a plan to take over Western civilization," warns David Rubin, "and we need to recognize it for what it is." Mr. Rubin is a native New Yorker who served as mayor of the Israeli town of Shiloh. He spoke to The Washington Times about his new book, "The Islamic Tsunami: Israel and America in the Age of Obama" (2010, Shiloh Israel Press).
According to Mr. Rubin, the first wave of the tsunami is Islamic terrorism, which he says is "a strategy intended to intimidate people so they won't speak out when the second wave hits." Mr. Rubin has firsthand experience with terrorist violence; he and his 3-year-old son, "Ruby" Rubin, were wounded in a Dec. 18, 2001, terrorist attack in Jerusalem. Afterward, he established the Shiloh Israel Children's Fund dedicated to helping relieve the trauma suffered by child victims of terrorism.
The second and more threatening wave is the creeping takeover of Western political and social institutions, something Mr. Rubin calls the "silent tsunami." The spearhead of this movement is "collusion between Islamic ideologues and the far left to promote the idea of moral relativism," he said, "that all values and ideologies are equal. But they are not. Americans have never believed this."
One dangerous manifestation of this viewpoint is the fashionable intellectual movement to infiltrate Shariah law interpretations into American jurisprudence, something for which there is no need and no precedent and which is antithetical to American norms and traditions. The notion of creating a "Shariah compliant" U.S. Constitution is really a way of ending the American ideal. ...

When you replace the morality with class warfare, you also replace good and evil with poor and rich. Actions are no longer good or bad, except within the context of class. Murder is a crime for the rich, but not for the poor, or the rich who claim to be fighting for the poor.
Under class warfare morality, there are two types of criminals. The depraved and the deprived. The depraved are well off. The deprived are not. When the former commit a crime, it is because they are depraved. When the latter commit a crime, it is because they are deprived. And being deprived, they bear no responsibility for what they do.
The practical application of this form of left-wing morality is all around us. When justifying terrorism, the left argues that the terrorists are deprived, but the soldiers who shoot them are depraved. The Israeli civilians who are murdered by terrorists are depraved, on the other hand the poor starving Hamas supporters of Gaza are only deprived. The left holds that the root cause of terrorism is deprivation. On the other hand those who fight terrorists are depraved, because they kill them, instead of giving them what they want and ending their deprivation.
The same model was commonly used by liberals for domestic crime. Criminals were deprived. Their victims were depraved. The robber, the rapist and the murderer became heroes, fighting against oppression. Their victims were the oppressors, no matter whether they were bank tellers, college students or just random passerby. By not being deprived, they were automatically found guilty of being depraved. And even if their liberal credentials were in order, the liberal credentials of the deprived were always better. ...
... So too the depraved-deprived formulation justifies anything that the left needs to do in order to come to power. Lie, cheat, steal, murder and even genocide. Nothing can be wrong when your only moral test is whether a given act will help you achieve power. That is why the left justifies crimes and terrorism. Because they are not in conflict with their morality. Only with the "bourgeois morality" of the ordinary American. Who doesn't matter anyway. Because his commitment to morality and nations labels him one of the depraved. One of those who must be swept aside for the left to come into its own kingdom. Like that of the Soviet Union and North Korea, to build their own kingdom of the deprived in every nation in the free world.

The last three weeks I have traveled about, taking the pulse of the more forgotten areas of central California. I wanted to witness, even if superficially, what is happening to a state that has the highest sales and income taxes, the most lavish entitlements, the near-worst public schools (based on federal test scores), and the largest number of illegal aliens in the nation, along with an overregulated private sector, a stagnant and shrinking manufacturing base, and an elite environmental ethos that restricts commerce and productivity without curbing consumption.
During this unscientific experiment, three times a week I rode a bike on a 20-mile trip over various rural roads in southwestern Fresno County. I also drove my car over to the coast to work, on various routes through towns like San Joaquin, Mendota, and Firebaugh. And near my home I have been driving, shopping, and touring by intent the rather segregated and impoverished areas of Caruthers, Fowler, Laton, Orange Cove, Parlier, and Selma. My own farmhouse is now in an area of abject poverty and almost no ethnic diversity; the closest elementary school (my alma mater, two miles away) is 94 percent Hispanic and 1 percent white, and well below federal testing norms in math and English.
Here are some general observations about what I saw (other than that the rural roads of California are fast turning into rubble, poorly maintained and reverting to what I remember seeing long ago in the rural South). First, remember that these areas are the ground zero, so to speak, of 20 years of illegal immigration. There has been a general depression in farming — to such an extent that the 20- to-100-acre tree and vine farmer, the erstwhile backbone of the old rural California, for all practical purposes has ceased to exist ...

Between students coming to school too tired and distracted to learn, and parents who automatically side with their child in disputes with teachers, educators are blaming the lack of classroom discipline on parents that "buy off" their kids. One of the best teachers is experience. I don’t have many specific memories of book-work I did as a home-schooled child, but I will always remember the inner workings of the ear from the model we built, the patterns of beavers from the dam my mother allowed us to dig in the front yard, and the layers of a volcano from the ice-cream “volcano” we created (and ate) with strawberry “lava” and powdered sugar “ash”. Two hundred and fifty Eritrean and Sudanese migrants are waiting for the right moment to cross over Egypt's border with Israel, Egyptian paper AlMasri AlYoum reported Tuesday. They are currently with traffickers in the Sinai desert, an Egyptian security source said.

AS AUSTRALIA counted the toll from the tragic sinking of a refugee boat on Wednesday, the people of Christmas Island took small consolation from the fact their improvised rescue effort had saved lives.
At least 28 people, including four infants, perished but some of the nine surviving children owe their lives to the quick thinking of Christmas Islanders, who threw lifejackets into the turbulent sea and tried to direct them to safety.
In all, 42 survivors had been accounted for. The refugees were believed to be mainly Iranians and Iraqi Kurds. Those who were uninjured were yesterday placed in the island's immigration detention centre.

This week’s edition of “Stakelbeck on Terror” gives us a glimpse into the world of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. In an interview with a CIA operative who worked undercover within the Guard, we learn how Islamists are using mosques in the U.S. to advance terrorism and jihad.
Excerpts:
Khalili: Mosques are supposed to be a place for prayer. A place for submission to God. But they are used as a recruitment center, for backdoor meetings, transfer of arms and cash and putting together terrorist activities and I was involved in some of their meetings.
E.S: You made a key point, that Iran used mosques and Islamic cultural centers in the West to further its agenda...could you get a little bit more specific about that? How does Iran uses mosques here in the U.S. and in Europe to plot terrorism?
Khalili: I can tell you from experience: I was part of the operation, I was involved in the Islamic community, and I can tell you clearly that out of mosques, there was a big effort with the Afghan communities by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards members--and with Pakistanis, Turks and others. And they would recruit from them, they would transfer cash and arms. And mosques provided a safe haven, and actually, in my view, were one of the centers of the operation. So if an intelligence agency such as the CIA infiltrates a mosque and understands that there is a specific Guards member who runs it, then actually they could be very successful in drawing a chart of all the terrorist activities in that specific region. That's how central the mosque operation was.
E.S.: And that's in Europe--you were involved in some of these operations in Europe. How about the U.S.?
Khalili: It's absolutely the same. They recruit, they train, they sell the ideology of martyrdom, and many, many are guided and connected to terrorist groups. And you've seen this: many U.S. born citizens, Muslims, unfortunately, have been sold this idea and are sent to Al Qaeda camps or others. But the Iranians are very active in this country through the mosques and Islamic cultural centers to make those connections and run those operations.

International Al-Qaida Plots Include U.S. as Target IPT News
Al-Qaida is preparing a series of attacks on Western targets, especially in the United States, during the Christmas season, Middle Eastern and European officials say.
Iraqi authorities said Wednesday that captured insurgents confessed that al-Qaida is plotting suicide attacks in the United States and Europe in the coming weeks. Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari called the confessions indications of a "critical threat."
Some of the insurgents told Iraqi authorities they are part of a group which takes direct orders from al-Qaida's central leadership. The captured suspects "represent the main structure of the al-Qaida organization in Iraq," said Iraqi Interior minister Jawad al-Bolani.
Last Saturday's car and suicide bombings in Stockholm were just a small part of many attacks planned as part of the wider al-Qaida plot, the captured insurgents said. The Iraqi-born man suspected to be behind the attacks, Taimour Abdulwahab al-Abdaly, is now said to have been trained by al-Qaida's affiliate in Iraq, the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI).
